The Author
Nikki-Rae Alkema is the creator and principal author of www.TheDifferentDish.com. A graduate of the University of California, San Diego with a Bachelor of Arts degree in International Studies, Alkema has developed a penchant to explore the world around her. She has traveled widely, which she credits largely to the support of her dear flight attendant friend and her adventuresome family upbringing. Some of the author’s favorite destinations include Ghana, Israel, Spain, and the Pacific Northwest. As a young adult, she has lived in Barcelona, Spain and Washington, D.C.
Alkema’s hobbies include writing, photography, cooking, nerd culture, and more. Currently, she takes residence in her native Southern California near family, friends, and warm weather.

The Dish
If there was anything that the author was a natural at, rest assured it never began as cooking. In an effort to save her from culinary boredom, Alkema’s friends in Barcelona taught her the ways of the kitchen. Together, they bonded through cenar (dining) and amistad (friendship). A love for kitchen creation was born.
Alkema’s natural tendencies have always pointed toward curiosity at the way things work. The Different Dish sprung from the author’s daily explorations in search of the things that entertain, inspire, and make life tastier. From discovering the complexities of the eggplant to returning from Jerusalem obsessed with passion fruit, Alkema’s Dish quests for the deliciously unique. ¡Qué aproveché!
